What is a horror case file?

A horror case file is a sealed box of physical evidence — statements, photographs, hint envelopes and a sealed verdict — that you solve like an investigation instead of reading like a book. One case takes 40 minutes to an hour, plays with one to four people, and needs no app, no host and no subscription.
What is a horror case file?
A horror case file is a sealed box of physical evidence — witness statements, photographs, hint envelopes and a sealed verdict — built around an unsolved crime. You read the documents, argue over them, and commit to naming a culprit before opening the verdict. It is closer to an investigation than a novel.
The format goes by several names elsewhere — a murder mystery box, a detective game, an escape room in a box. A case file is the horror version: the crime is real within the fiction, the paperwork is presented as evidence rather than story, and nothing is narrated to you. Everything is discovered.
What comes inside the box?
Six things, each sealed separately so you meet them in the right order. Nothing is digital and nothing is a prop for its own sake — every item in the box is evidence you need, or a deliberate distraction the office put there on purpose.

- Photograph evidence
- Printed on photo stock, sealed separately from the paperwork.
- Two hint envelopes
- Opened one at a time, and only when the table is genuinely stuck.
- Two pages for notes
- For the theories, the crossings-out, and the name you commit to.
- An instruction card
- How the file works, start to finish.
- The verdict envelope
- Sealed. Opening it ends the case, whatever you have written down.
How is it different from a book, an escape room or a board game?
A book ends when the author decides; a case file ends when you commit to an answer. An escape room ends when a clock does, and you leave with nothing. A case file is yours to keep, works without power or wifi, and can be handed to someone else who has not read it.

How long does one case take to solve?
Most people finish a case in a single sitting of 40 minutes to an hour. Harder Level III files run longer, particularly with a larger group, because more of the time goes on argument rather than reading. There is no timer and nothing expires if you stop and return later.
Difficulty is printed on every case as Level I, II or III. Level I is the one to start with if nobody at the table has done this before; Level III assumes you have, and is where the evidence starts actively misleading you.
How many people do you need?
One to four. Solo works because nothing is narrated and no host is required — every answer is already inside the box. Groups of three or four take longer, since the evidence contradicts itself in places and the disagreement is most of the entertainment.
Do you need an app, a subscription or wifi?
No. A case file is a physical box bought once. There is no app to download, no account to create, no subscription, and nothing to scan. A table, a pen and a quiet room are the only requirements. Nothing in the box requires a search engine to solve.
Are the case files in Urdu or English?
Either — you choose when you order. Every case is produced in English and in Roman Urdu, which is Urdu written in Latin script. The whole box arrives in the language you picked: the statements, the evidence, the hints and the verdict. A box is not bilingual.
Roman Urdu means Urdu written in Latin script — the way most people in Pakistan actually type it. If you speak Urdu but do not read the Nastaliq script comfortably, that is the edition to pick. Which edition should you choose?
Can you solve the same case twice?
Not meaningfully. Once you know who did it, the evidence stops being ambiguous and the file is spent. Cases are made to be passed on to someone who has not read them rather than shelved, which is why people tend to buy them one at a time.
